Wooden Beds

Wooden Beds Explained

It can be a bit confusing when looking into buying a wooden bed as there is plenty of choice and a wide difference in price. The cost of a wooden bed is predominantly determined by design, how long the wooden bed takes to make and the quality and quantity of timber used to craft the bed.

Cheap Wooden Beds

"Cheap" wooden beds may seem like a bargain however they can be false economy and won't last two minutes. If you've had one you will know what I mean. It really is true when it comes to wooden beds you get what you pay for. Our wooden beds are flatpacked or your wouldn't be able to get them up the stairs, however poor quality wooden beds are also harder to put together and can be damaged easily in the process.

Are Veneer Wooden Beds Good Quality?

We are often asked does the wooden bed have a veneer or laminate? We don't sell any wooden beds or furniture with a laminate on they won't last long at all and we pride ourselves on quality. Some of our wooden beds do have veneers, however this isn't necessarily to be frowned upon and some beds costing thousands are veneered. It is more economical for both manufacturers and therefore the consumer to use a durable hardwood for the interior and then add the wood veneer.

A veneered wooden bed can give you a really solid and good quality wooden bed at a fraction of the cost if it were made with all wood. The secret is to make sure the veneer is not thin and the price of the wooden bed is indicative of this. Thin veneers will crack and tear over time, thicker wood veneers can look as good as new for many years. We are a specialist bed shop with only quality wooden beds, at Sleepland Beds you will only find wooden beds with thick veneers so we have none to compare with. However you will know what I mean if you have been researching in the retail stores.

Solid Wooden Beds

Wooden beds can also be made with solid wood such as oak, pine walnut, mahogany etc. Solid wooden beds generally cost more, especially handmade wooden beds by master craftsman. If you like a traditional  wooden bed it is worth investing in a good quality solid wood bed that will last and like a fine wine gets better with age (or Shaun Connery).

You can get wooden beds quite cheaply, although as it's often said buy cheap buy twice. You will get a nicer bed, better value and quality if you spend the same amount on a wooden bed with a thick veneer. Even our cheapest solid wooden beds are chunky and top quality as we keep our margins very low.

We often see pine beds or even oak beds that look insipid and as if they would fall down if you pushed them never mind sleep on them. A good quality wooden bed will also have more attention to detail and the overall construction is more solid and durable.

A "cheap" wooden bed is also more likely to come from untraceable and/or not from sustainable sources. We only sell wooden beds that can have their origin traced and are from sustainable forestry.

Wooden Bed Base

A wooden bed nearly always has wooden slats for the base. With good quality wooden beds these are usually hardwood, beech or pine. There is a lot of debate as to how wide the gap should be, we recommend no wider than 3 inches. If the wooden bed is of good quality and from a reputable source the bedmaker will place much importance in the slats so you don't need to worry. If the gap is too big this can affect the support of the mattress and not only give you an uncomfortable sleep it can damage the mattress and also invalidate the mattress guarantee.

Some wooden beds have a sprung slatted base however the with most quality wooden beds a hardwood base is better due to the weight of the frame.

Wooden Beds and Matching Furniture

Wooden beds are perfect if you want a uniformed bedroom design as most have matching furniture. If you buy matching furniture with your wooden bed from Sleepland Beds we give you a fantastic multi-buy discount (look under the wooden bed for the matching furniture at the special prices). Matching drawers and guest bed trundles have become very popular to place under a wooden bed too.
