Teenagers and Sleep

Teenagers, Beds and Sleep

Many studies have been done on the amount of sleep teenagers need correlated to how much they actually spend asleep. The average results across various studies are that very few get the 9 to 10 hours they need.

Teenagers more than any other age group tend to have an irregular sleep pattern. Teenagers are a little like vampires, prefering to be awake when it's dark. How many of us have complained about our teenagers sleeping the day away on weekends. This is because they prefer to stay up late and then sleep in because they need to catch up.

My children have always correlated staying up with being more grown up and an exciting thing to do. Asking "when I'm 10 I can stay up later can't I" It then gradually occurs that the child going into teenage years doesn't go to sleep before 11 or 12pm

By staying up later it is difficult for a teenager to establish a regular sleep pattern. You may notice they have trouble getting up for school. I know I did, my mum had to drag the covers off me, and I hated it when she would open the curtains and let the bright light in. I wonder now if it was because I stayed up late, I really can't remember to be honest.

It could be they don't want to go to school, however it's more likely because they aren't getting enough sleep. If a teenager goes to bed at 11pm and gets up a 7am, they are sleeping 1/2 and hour to an hours sleep per night.

As with any of us at any age, if teenagers don't get enough sleep it can lead to a number of problems. Their ability to learn and concentrate at school or college is severely hampered and it also has a negative effect on a teenager’s ability to remember important information.

Sleep deprivation is also linked to our moods. If you have a moody, irritable teenager it may not just be hormones it could be lack of sleep. A teenagers body is maturing everyday and needs plenty of sleep.

One thing you can do for a teenager to encourage them to sleep is make their bedroom as comfortable and enticing as possible. I love divan beds yet for a teenager they aren't very exciting.

Our most popular beds for teenagers are the futon highsleeper beds They are cool in design and practical too. Some with double futons, others with a single futon and study desk. The Hyder Storage bunk comes with the futon and desk plus super cool storage steps on the ladders.

Or if the ceiling is too low for a highsleeper, midsleepers are good if they need lots of storage. Also nice for a teenager are leather beds , nice and comfortable to read or play their psp on. Some even come with storage in the base.

Also it is important to look at is their mattress comfortable and support. A growing child needs a good supportive mattress. When I was younger I had the cheapest mattress going and had it for years.

My parents didn't realise how important it was and thought because I was lighter any old mattress would do. This is far from correct and a good quality and supportive mattress with a medium or medium to firm feel is perfect for a teenager. If their mattress isn't supportive, their body will adjust to the mattress creating problems and lots of tossing and turning. A supportive mattress will adjust to the teenagers body and lessen the tossing and turning, thus giving a better quality sleep. Also the added benefit it if they have a mattress that is heavenly it is more of incentive to go to bed.
