Adjustable beds have recently seen a growth in popularity within the UK. It was generally seen that adjustable beds were for health facilities and hospitals or medical reasons within the home. They are often referred to as a hospital bed. The term adjustable bed is now the common name as they are for anyone and everyone who wants one.
The old fashioned adjustable beds used to feature a hand or foot mechanism. These are actually still in some UK hospitals and nursing homes despite electric adjustable beds being on the market for a long time now. I was a nurse until quite recently and didn't think twice at time, just that they were hard work pumping up and down. The back rest was even worse you would use a crank mechanism which was very difficult to use and quite difficult to find the perfect position.
Knowing what I know now I wonder why they still have them, probably because they can be very expensive. They don't need to be you just need to shop in the right place.

Thankfully though technology has introduced the electric motorised adjustable bed and the hand operated ones are seen less and less. This technology had crossed over into the consumer market and we can all have an adjustable bed in our homes and not just for medical reasons. You can also get bigger sizes so you don't have to sleep away from your partner. You can control your individual adjustment though, so no arguing over the remote control.
The price has also come down as they have become more sought after. The mattress quality has also gone up as specialist mattress companies make adjustable beds. In the past the beds were designed more by medical companies who weren't bed specialists.
Why an Adjustable Bed?
Why should we choose an adjustable bed over an ordinary flat bed. The two main reasons are for medical reasons or for the sake of comfort. Adjustable beds raise the angle of the head and foot of the divan, using an electric motor via a handheld remote control. Unlike a standard bed an adjustable bed allows you to change position.

If you enjoy watching television in bed you can use pillows. Or if you want to put your feet up you can put them on pillows. The pillows move about though, however we can always shift them back again. An adjustable bed can help you gain the perfect position for reading, watching television or simply relaxing.

For Health
If you have back pain, poor circulation or suffer with indigestion or heartburn and adjustable bed could be perfect for you. If you have poor circulation it often affects the legs, this is because they are the furthest away from the heart. This is why cold feet are a symptom and sometimes look blue. Elevating the legs above the heart can help with this. Although we are talking about adjustable beds I would recommend a foam mattress too if you have circulation problems as this can also help. The same if you have back or hip pain.
If you do suffer with acid reflux it is better to sleep with the head and shoulders with some elevation. If you have lots of pillows this can cause neck or back pain as your posture will be all wrong. An adjustable bed is a lot better.
An adjustable bed could be the perfect solution for these ailments and many others. I will talk again about adjustable beds for more serious ailments. The ones mentioned are quite common and although not medically threatening they do affect our quality of life.
