Mattress and divan beds jargon explained
I have tried to write this guide to divan beds and mattresses in as brief as possible and in an easy to understand way. If you are need further explanation please do not hesitate in giving us a call.

Deep quilted:

A quilted top layer which has a smoother flatter surface. With the mattress stitched together at the sides.

Micro quilted:

A special stitching which attaches the cover to the top layers. This allows deeper layers of fillings to sink into as the stitching goes deep into the mattress to hold the fillings in place. Micro quilted mattresses can be deep filled and high lofted, usually found in the mid - luxury range.

Jump and tack

A special quilting stitch which produces smooth pillow top areas for luxury comfort. The mattress can be extra deep filled and high lofted as the stitching is clever in the way it is similar to hand tufting.

Hand tufted

Tufted mattresses have a nylon tape which is passed through the mattress at regular intervals and secured each side by cotton/Wool rosettes. This pre-tensions the mattress to give a firmer feel. Deep Filled, high lofted beds are available in the mid -luxury ranges.

High lofted

Found in mid - luxury end of the ranges. The mattress is extra deep filled and stitched in such a way to bring the fillings high. More fillings to sink into.

Hand side stitched

Can be found in hand crafted mattresses and top end of the market mattresses. This is a highly skilled and very labour intensive process. Both the fillings and springs are attached to the side panels for increased stability, strength and comfort. The mattress will last a lot longer if hand side stitched.

Memory Foam

People choose memory foam for different reasons

  • For luxury comfort
  • Pressure relief
  • Correct posture and spinal alignment
  • To aid circulation
  • Painful joints or muscular pain
  • More restful sleep as turning over is minimised greatly
  • Or a combination of them all
  • Memory foam responds to your body temperature. It will mould to your body shape so that each part is equally supported.
  • Ideal density is between 3.5 and 6
  • Lower density will react too quickly, it will spread out and lose it's shape. Not providing comfort, support or any of the benefits memory foam should. It can also break down quickly, even if it feels comfortable at first it will not for long.
  • The support base of the memory foam is just as important as the density.
  • A high quality fast reacting reflex/rebound foam is recommended for foam only mattresses
  • Our sprung memory foam mattresses have an extra layer of reflex/rebound foam to ensure the memory foam provides the optimum support and comfort.
  • The support for the memory foam is just as important as the quality of the memory foam. If your mattress was only memory foam you would link in too deep and feel swamped, find it difficult to turn over and become too hot.
  • A good support is one that springs back quickly the opposite to the best memory foam where it reacts slowly.
  • All our memory foam mattresses provide optimum and fast spring back support.
  • Ideal depth is between 5cms and 6cms

To receive these benefits it is important to realise not all memory foam mattresses or beds are equal or equally priced. The last couple of years memory foam has taken the bed industry by storm therefore the cost of memory foam has come down. The downside to this is there are a lot of poor quality, low density versions on the market.

You may be led to believe you are getting a bargain with a lower priced foam mattress. The higher the density the more it costs to produce. Although more expensive it is more cost effective in the long run and will provide the benefits a memory foam mattress should and will not break down therefore lasting longer.
